Pacific Oil Management announces Prof John Pumwa scholarship recipients

31032023-PACIFIC Oil Management Limited is pleased to announce four pioneer recipients of the Professor John Pumwa Engineering Scholarship.

The Professor John Pumwa Engineering Scholarship is the first of its kind that honours a Papua New Guinean academic, to provide selected students the required support and opportunities to excel in their field of study.

Pacific Oil Management Ltd has introduced the scholarship in collaboration and approval of the Pumwa family for the program to be established at the PNG University of Technology in honour of the country’s first ever Ph.D. and Professor in Mechanical Engineering.

After a thorough assessment of the top performing final year students from the University’s Mechanical Engineering department, four students through a selection process have been awarded the scholarship. Awardees demonstrated a high level of understanding and commitment that met the aspirations and visions of both the late Prof and the Pacific Oil Management Ltd.

These four students are Lawrence Purtang, Dominic Mikmik, Cosma-LeighOli and Petra Kunuma.

“Pacific Oil Management would like to congratulate these four students, the Mechanical Engineering Department, and the PNG University of Technology for allowing this program to succeed. We believe in the next generation of leaders and will continue to support the Mechanical Engineering department and the University now and in the future,” Pacific Oil Management said.

“The company wishes the students well in their studies and looks forward to having them on board with us for work placement.”

Family representative Daisy Pumwa said, “We give our congratulations and best wishes to the scholarship recipients in their studies and as pioneers of this unique scholarship that they honor the legacy of Late Professor John Pumwa as a history maker of Engineering in PNG.

“He was the First Professor of Engineering in Papua New Guinea, and he had a passion to educate the young engineers by imparting his knowledge and skills to those that will change our nation.

Papua New Guinea needs more engineers to build this nation and May you be part of the change our country needs.”

“The Papua New Guinea University of Technology and especially the Mechanical Engineering Department, would like to extend its sincere gratitude to Pacific-Oil Management (PNG) for its generous contribution towards providing scholarships to students studying mechanical engineering,” says Department of Mechanical Engineering Head of Department Dr Shoeb Ahmed Syed.

“This initiative marks a significant milestone for the department’s staff, management, and students. The late Professor Dr John Pumwa, who hailed from humble beginnings, emphasized the importance of commitment to the mechanical engineering degree program, and this scholarship embodies his principles.

This scholarship program not only helps the department students who are in need but also provides a sense of security by guaranteeing a future beyond graduation for at least three years, which is exceptional compared to other Graduate Schemes in the country. Moreover, this scholarship demonstrates that someone is invested in the student’s future, which is inspiring and will encourage them to pursue knowledge, particularly in the mechanical field where their sponsor is established.”

The University hopes that this relationship between the Pacific-Oil Management (PNG) and the university will contribute to many more engineering professionals in the country in the future and beyond.
